I’ve been meaning to set up a home media center with a Raspberry Pi for a while. Now, I finally found the time to build one for myself and thought it might be useful to pen it all down. The idea was to build an inexpensive solution to store and organize all my media files and turn my regular LED TV into a smart one. There are a few steps involved but essentially the end result will let you access all your movies, tv shows, music, and whatnot from one central location within your own network. It will all cost you less than $125.

What you need:

  • Plex Server (we’ll be setting this up)
  • Raspberry Pi 4 Model B 4GB
  • MicroSD card 8GB or higher
  • An old laptop
  • Working computer to perform all the operations
  • A bootable USB drive
  • Keyboard
  • Monitor/TV
  • Micro HDMI to HDMI cable
  • Ethernet cable
  • Stable internet (duh!)

Setting up the Raspberry Pi

Buying a Pi

First things first. We need to get our hands on a Raspberry Pi. I recommend going for a Raspberry Pi 4 Model B with at least 4GB RAM. Sure…
